HOW'S IT FEEL TO BE SO WRONG?

To Be on the Losing Side of History?

by Loren Adams – June 28, 2009

I've oft imagined how ordinary Germans felt when finally coming to the tortuous realization their country was on the wrong side of history and international law. What was it like to smell the stench of a million rotting corpses piled up just a short step from their cottages and pristine country estates? What were they thinking when listening to their führer via radio – bragging about victories over enemy strawmen which were propped up to justify Germany's divinely commissioned war against "terrorism"? Did it ever cross their minds, at least once – every word was a deliberate lie intended to persuade the masses to grant more control to a government already drunk with power bent on world domination?

And what of the churches and the so-called Christians, the chosen ones? Did not congregants question the authenticity of the Leader's Christianity when claiming Providence commanded him to invade Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland and so forth? Initial victories seemed to validate Hitler's claim of divine approval. "Winning" always confirms God's perfect will, does it not? (At least dogma embraced by heretics arrives at such a conclusion.) Yet when allied forces were at the gates, what went through their minds?

It's easy to claim, "I'm not with stupid," after one has voted for such inept leadership more than once. But it's disloyal to the Constitution and the Republic to go further and grant permission slips to an absolute liar and crook determined to declare illegal wars built on well-constructed pretexts and enabled with cooked intelligence. After all, the decision was arrived at years before landing office.

Put yourself in the shoes of German resistance. Through make-believe of your time-machine visualize going underground and enlisting with the White Rose Society. See how many Jews you can snatch from the jaws of torture and death, the gas chambers and mass burial trenches.

Now, fast-forward 70 years later. What was going through voters' minds that assisted GW Bush to power? Is there not an ounce of remorse now that everyone can see the total wreck he made of the nation?

Similar to Nazis vilifying Jews, the right-wing [encouraged by Bush] demonized Muslims, Democrats, liberals, and anyone else that crossed them in their quest for power and the establishment of one-party rule.

Of course, the Bush era wasn't nearly as bad as Nazi Germany. But they are of similar vein – the dehumanizing, pompous spirit that proclaims, "We are the super race, God's chosen people. Therefore, everyone else is beneath us, no better than animals and material resources to be exploited or dispensed of at will.  Because God is on our side; we are the exceptional ones, the nation that sits on a hill above all the rest spreading the light of freedom and righteousness to the four corners of the globe."

Do you sense how this spirit of superiority parallels the 30s and 40s? Germany was mesmerized by a nationalistic fervor where pageantry and symbolism supplanted justice and equality. USA was mesmerized by a similar nationalistic fervor where flags and lapel pins meant much more than true patriotism. The administration, so full of chicken-hawks, placed ceremony above service; they never served, yet demanded others die for their premeditated wars constructed on lies. Do you see how parallel attitudes could lead to similar consequences?

Only after German cities turned to ash did they wake to the truth. Only after America's cities were rapidly deteriorating did voters finally decide to throw the bums out (at least on a temporary basis). Was America's awakening too late?

I wonder how long will the nation allow Barack Obama to mend fences? Most Americans are not bright enough to read the writing on the wall in order to prevent the nation from again being sucked into another power-grab by the vengeful right. Cheney wishes for another event to reestablish control, not just to say, "I told you so."

It's incremental tyranny for which they aim. The right has no intention of relinquishing its grip on America, even after a sound defeat in '08. To them, governing is an entitlement; elections are meaningless. To Rove, governing and manipulating events were his trophies. To Cheney, his moral destiny. And to Bush, his dynasty. America was but a possession in their hands to be used at their pleasure in fulfilling their lifelong vision. We can all now witness the fulfillment of their vision, their “mission accomplished”; the nation is the Titanic after the iceberg.

Long before the contested 2000 election, Bush and his insiders decided to invade Iraq. So, upon seizing office, his administration went into high gear planning the invasion. This is treason; no other word better describes the acts of deception that began years before 9/11. Bush realized he had to lie the nation to war. Cheney knew he was required to fix the intelligence around the policy to invade. Rove knew he was in charge of prepping the American people for war and to time each event to fit election cycles and political pressure points so Bush would have an easier time in selling the war. Men of integrity they were not.

I ask my conservative friends, "How's it feel to be so wrong, to be on the dark side of history by putting such a fool in office who made such a wreck of the nation?"

The question would fade if his effects weren't so pronounced and long-term. Yet the hateful right is determined to create schism. To lay the past aside, this element must at last be put in its place and the perpetrators of treason must be brought to justice. Otherwise, they’re going to continue to stir strife on their quest for control.   TPJmagazine
